There are many ways to get involved with the Institute for Democracy: research, education initiatives, policy projects, civic engagement, physical and virtual events, and more. We are always eager to get to know and work with individuals and institutions that share our values so that together we can have an even bigger impact, and jointly help to foster democracy.

Information For Becoming an Affiliate

We welcome applications to become an affiliate from students, PhD researchers, post-docs, faculty, and practitioners who work in our fields of interest.

Academics across all departments of Matej Bel University who share our values and who participate in the life of the Institute are eligible to be listed as Faculty Affiliates. If you are a UMB academic who fits these criteria, please send us an email identifying yourself, and your research interest(s) to demokracia@umb.sk.

In order to become an Academic Fellow, you must be a researcher based in Slovakia or abroad, working closely with one of our UMB Faculty Affiliates or Institute Directors on an active research project that fits within one or more of our research areas. If you are a researcher who fits these criteria, please send us an email identifying yourself, your institution and position, your research interest(s), and the name of your sponsor (UMB Faculty Affiliate or Institute Director) to demokracia@umb.sk.

 

If you are an academic who wishes to be in residence at the Institute for a limited period of time (usually from 1 week to 5 months), please refer to the Visitors section bellow.

In order to become a Fellow of Practice, you must be a civil society or policy leader based in Slovakia or abroad, working closely with one of our UMB Faculty Affiliates or Institute Directors on an active project that fits within one or more of our thematic areas of activity. If you are a civil society or policy leader who fits these criteria, please send us an email identifying yourself, your institution and position, your professional interest(s), and the name of your sponsor (UMB Faculty Affiliate or Institute Director) to demokracia@umb.sk.

 

If you are a practitioner who wishes to be in residence at the Institute for a limited period of time (usually from 1 week to 5 months), please refer to the Visitors section bellow.

There are various ways for students to engage and become affiliated with the Institute depending on your level of study and area of activity.

 

  • If you are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student at UMB who wants to actively participate in and help us manage life at the Institute as a Student Intern. If you are a student who fits these criteria, please fill out this online form.

 

  • If you are a Bachelor’s, Master’s student at UMB or at any other higher education institution in Slovakia or abroad working closely with one of our UMB Faculty Affiliates or Institute Directors on an active research or civic engagement project that fits within one or more of our thematic areas of activity, you can apply to become a (Undergraduate or Graduate) Student Affiliate. If you are a student who fits these criteria, please send us an email identifying yourself, your institution, study level, professional interest(s), and the name of your sponsor (UMB Faculty Affiliate or Institute Director) to demokracia@umb.sk.

 

  • If you are a PhD student at UMB or at any other higher education institution in Slovakia or abroad working closely with one of our UMB Faculty Affiliates or Institute Directors on an active research or civic engagement project that fits within one or more of our thematic areas of activity, you can apply to become a Fellow. If you are a PhD student who fits these criteria, please send us an email identifying yourself, your institution, study level, professional interest(s), and the name of your sponsor (UMB Faculty Affiliate or Institute Director) to demokracia@umb.sk.

 

  • Irregularly throughout the academic year we also publish calls for UMB students to work on specific research projects as (Undergraduate or Graduate) Student Research Interns. Calls for application will be published on our social media channels and posters at UMB.

 

  • If you are a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree student who wishes to be in residence at the Institute for a limited period of time (usually from 1 week to 5 months), please refer to the Visitors section below.

Academic and Student Visitors and Visitors of Practice are an important part of our Institute’s activities and we make a considerable effort to integrate them into the intellectual and social life of both the Institute and the University. We accept visitor applications on a rolling deadline.

Typically, visitors stay with us for 1 to 5 months (shorter visits may be possible). We provide our visitors with a working space (including a PC and access to a printer) and include them in all relevant discussions, events, and activities taking place at the Institute. Visitors will normally apply for funding schemes through their home institution in order to fund the cost of their visit. Please note that the Institute does not provide a salary or other financial payments to visitors.

 

Your application to the visitor program must include:

  • Your personal details and details of your planned visit including a work plan.
  • A current CV
  • A letter from your home institution, confirming approval of your proposed visit

If you are interested in coming to our Institute via Erasmus+, please indicate this in your application.
