Defending Rights, Building Bridges: A Day in Žilina with Ambassadors and Civil Society

Yesterday, the Institute for Democracy joined forces with the British Embassy in Bratislava for a day of dialogue at the Nová Synagóga, Žilina’s independent cultural centre. Representatives of more than 30 NGOs from across Slovakia came together to discuss the state of human rights in real communities — from grassroots challenges to systemic barriers. The first panel, moderated by Csilla Droppová, brought together civic leaders Róbert Furiel, Maroš Chmelík, Zuzana Janíčková, Eva Kováčechová, and Milan Zvada. The conversation gained a diplomatic dimension with the participation of H.E. Peter Nelson, Deputy Head of Mission Mark Reichwein, H.E. Nicolas Suran, and H.E. Bilal Zahid, whose presence opened the floor to a dynamic exchange across sectors and perspectives. A day that showed what happens when civil society and diplomacy share the same table.
