HUMAN FORUM goes to the Slovak regions

The Civic Platform for Democracy, which brings together dozens of civic organizations and initiatives, started a series of HUMAN FORUM meetings in the regions of Slovakia. The first one of the seven regional gatherings was held in Úsmev cinema on February 28th in Košice.

The aim of these meetings is to activate civil society and strengthen the elements of soft power and democracy, to discuss the upcoming pre-term elections, and decide what messages the civil sector wants to pass on to the public. The regional meetings envision bringing together organizations and individuals from different sectors, seeking cooperation and respect between parties despite opposing views.

Sociologist Michal Vašečka opened the session with a short introduction and insight into the current situation in Slovakia. This was followed by an interactive discussion and exchange of ideas between more than 40 representatives of different organizations from Eastern Slovakia, mainly in the context of social development in pre-election conditions and ongoing crises. The next discussion was held with the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador with Special Mission for Human Rights Peter Burian, within the framework of the Summit for Democracy.

The day continued with a discussion with the general public about the state of democracy in the Slovak Republic and the challenges the society is facing in the upcoming election of 2023, with the participation of Laura Dittel — Director of the Carpathian Foundation, Tomas Krissak — author of the comic book Kira and journalist Peter Schutz.
