UMB ranked among top institutions in Slovakia in terms of Horizon Europe funding

Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici was ranked among the top institutions in Slovakia in terms of Horizon Europe funding — we are very proud that the majority of the Horizon projects at UMB, including one as a coordinator, are connected to three of our Institute directors. Namely Kamila Borsekova, Jozef Michal Mintal, and their #BRRIDGE team who are leading the way in strengthening UMB’s research capacities in the field of democracy and policy, and trying to better understand the current democratic disconnect that stems from changes in technology, inequalities, culture, and governance. And Alexandra Bitusikova who is leading UMB’s team in #GENDERACTION+, which aims to contribute to the advancement of gender equality in the European Research Area.

The newest Horizon Europe statistics also reveal an exciting trend — that of Slovakia’s overall improvement in EU research and innovation framework programs, with a more than four-fold increase in successful Horizon project participation when compared with the first year of Horizon 2020. Even though there is still a big room for improvement when compared to our “older” EU friends, this result is a good reminder that also in Slovakia, usually with far fewer resources and way more bureaucracy, we are more than capable to do socially beneficial research that is competitive far beyond our borders.
